andblack Design Studio
We share common love for architecture and travel. That is why probably we took the brave decision of coming to India overland. We did a two months long trip crossing 14 countries to finally enter India on foot through Nepal. This adventurous trip broadened our outlooks and gave us the added confidence and exposure towards design and art in general.
We believe that the design process should be robust enough to inform all stages of design, from concept to detailing
Now in Ahmedabad, since the inception of andblack design studio, the duo has been involved in various projects ranging from Bridge, Corporate Office, Bungalow, Resort, Nursery School and other various interior projects. andblack’s philosophy lies in designing the process that leads to the ‘solution’. We believe that the design process should be robust enough to inform all stages of design, from concept to detailing. We constantly challenge ourselves to rethink these processes to suit the project. Exploration and experimentation has been the backbone of andblack design studio. Whatever we do from a chandelier to a bridge we try and question the basics of it. andblack strives to explore every aspect of design from material to spaces and forms. We have been experimenting with generative design processes and computational tools to achieve the complexity we see in forms of nature, for example. We recently finished a project for a Chennai based company called ‘Bio Incorporated’. It was a concept pavilion made of paper tubes, which was built in Ahmedabad and later transported to Delhi. It was a remarkable project and a landmark achievement for andblack.
In this pavilion, we just did not experiment with material, but designed a system that can be used to build structures made of any component like a paper tube, in various locations, forms sizes and uses. What we actually created was a fabric of paper tubes that was stitched together with a metal cable. This system allowed flexibility and gave us enough formal freedom. It can be proudly called as the first paper tube structure in India designed for outdoors.
